The Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology encompasses two distinct specialties within the medical sciences, namely Forensic Medicine and Toxicology. Both are globally recognized and well-structured fields within their own rights.
Forensic Medicine is a specialized branch of medicine that applies its principles and practices to clarify questions that arise in judicial proceedings. It covers significant aspects of medical sciences. On the other hand, Toxicology deals with all facets of toxic agents, including their identification, harmful effects and various associated medico-legal implications. It encompasses environmental, occupational and analytical Forensic & Clinical Toxicology.
This combination of two scientific disciplines is clinically oriented, necessitating the clinical examination, documentation and certification of both living and deceased individuals. The interpretation of findings is conducted in accordance with the law of the land. Prospective doctors require comprehensive theoretical and practical training at the undergraduate level in these subjects. The subject matter is thoroughly disseminated through theory classes, practical sessions and medico-legal autopsy demonstrations. This ensures that a third-year MBBS student acquires the skills necessary for medical certification, report preparation and medico-legal documentation.
Our qualified and trained faculty is dedicated to advancing health and medical sciences through scientific teaching and research. Students are trained to utilize every scientific means at their disposal in their practice, especially when called upon to assist the law. They are advised to keep all their senses alert to perceive the facts so that no detail remains hidden or undetermined. After all, “What is so important is the administration of justice,” and this fulfills the teaching objectives of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology.
