Prof. Dr. Maj Gen (Retd) Muhammad Rafiq Zafar, HI(M)

HOD Introduction

Professor, Doctor, Maj Gen (Retd) Muhammad Rafiq Zafar, HI(M), with qualifications of FCPS (Surgery), FCPS(Urology), Diploma in Laparoscopic Surgery (France) And CHPE (NUMS), is a dedicated and accomplished general surgeon and urologist with a vast experience of working at various clinical, teaching and administrative appointments in hospitals of Pakistan army, navy and civil armed forces, where he remained involved in upgrading and modernizing the concerned departments.

He has more than 20 years’ experience of teaching urology and surgery at various hospitals and medical colleges including CMH Lahore Medical College Lahore, Bahria University Medical and Dental College Karachi, Army Medical college Rawalpindi and Bahria University College of Medicine Islamabad.

  He has four years’ experience in war against terrorism, managing all types of injuries while serving at CMH Peshawar and operational area of 11 Corps (various FTCs). 

While performing all types of general and urological surgeries, his professional focus on kidney stone diseases, renal transplantation, laser prostatectomy, and laparoscopic urological surgery has made him a pioneering figure in introducing Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy (PCNL), laser prostatectomy, and laparoscopic surgery in the military healthcare system. He was the lead transplant surgeon at AFIU and held the esteemed position of Master Trainer in endo-urology and kidney stone surgery. This underscores his unwavering commitment to advancing surgical practices in the military healthcare system.

 

He has a unique honor of commanding/heading Armed Forces Institute of Urology for about five years, where his performance, particularly role in in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, upgrading and the modernization of AFIU and arranging funds and overseeing the construction and functionalization of the new building for AFIU, was widely acknowledged.

Introduction

Urology is a branch of Surgery which deals with the diseases of the urogenital problems of the male and urinary tract diseases of the female population. Recent technological advancements like Extracorporeal Shockwave Lithotripsy, minimally invasive operative techniques, Lithoclast & Laser for stone diseases and prostate have given new horizon to the subject of Urology. A steadily rising incidence of Kidney diseases has given an added importance to the subject. 

Teaching Methodology

a. Clinical rotation to the Urology Department

MBBS students go through the clinical rotation to the department of Urology in 2nd year, 3rd year, 4th and Final Year of their studies. They are trained in history taking and clinical examination of urological patients. Urological investigations are discussed. Students are trained in patients’ evaluation and reaching the diagnosis. Treatment options are discussed. 

b. Demonstrations in Operation Theatres 

The students observe & participate in the operative procedures in side the operation theatre. Endoscopic procedures for Prostate, Tumours & Urinary Stones are performed & demonstrated on LCD Screen.

c. Lectures 

Interactive lecture sessions on various topics of Urology are conducted for 4th Year and Final Year MBBS students.

d. Group Discussions and Seminars during the clinical rotation 

The students actively participate in the group discussions. They are also encouraged and trained to participate in national conferences and seminars on the topics of Urology. 

Assesment

At the end of the clinical rotation, each student undergoes through a process of evaluation on the pattern of Final Year MBBS examination.

- Urethral Stricture 

- Urinary Stone Disease

- Perinephric Abcess, Pyonephrosis, Acute & Chronic Pyelonephritis 

- UTIs and STDs (Sexually transmitted diseases)

- Cystic Diseases of the Kidney

- Trauma to the Renal Tract

- Urinary Oncology: Renal, Bladder, Prostate and Testicular Cancers

- Scrotal Swellings

- Vesicoureteric Reflux, Posterior Urethral Valves 

- Neurogenic Bladder Dysfunction

- Acute and Chronic Renal Failure and Renal Transplant 

State of the Art Urological Procedures

We offer state of the art urological operative procedures to a vast cross section of patients including beneficiaries and those from the private sectors. Uretero-renoscopy with Intracorporeal Lithotripsy and Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy are among the routinely performed procedures.

The Department offers house job facility to the fresh medical graduates and is recognized by the Pakistan Medical & Dental Council for this training.

 

The Department is recognised by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for complete residency training programme leading to FCPS- Urology.
