1. Introduction to Operative Dentistry Operative Dentistry focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and restoration of diseased or damaged teeth. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of cavity preparation and restorative procedures in the second year of the BDS program. During the two-year pre-clinical phase, students practice basic restorative techniques on phantom head simulators, allowing them to develop essential psychomotor skills and gain proficiency in handling restorative materials. These competencies are later applied in clinical settings during the final year.
2. Cavity Preparation and Restorative Materials Students are trained to prepare cavities of varying complexity and restore them using a range of restorative materials. Emphasis is placed on understanding material properties, indications, and proper manipulation techniques.
3. Preventive Dentistry (Paedodontics Integration) In the final year clinical rotations, students are also trained in preventive dental procedures. These include fluoride application, oral hygiene instruction, pit and fissure sealants, and the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) technique. This component is integrated with paedodontics to promote caries prevention and minimally invasive dentistry.
4. Endodontics (Final Year Training) The final year curriculum includes an introduction to endodontics, which deals with the morphology, physiology, and pathology of the dental pulp and periradicular tissues. Students receive supervised hands-on training in performing endodontic procedures on patients, enabling them to develop clinical competence in root canal treatment.
